Remnants of Tropical Storm Fred in 2021 had Haywood County on edge this past weekend. With a shift toward the East, Hurricane Ian sparred Western North Carolina from the heavy rains and storm damage that other areas received.
Rain amounts varied from just 1/3 of an inch on Mt Mitchell to about 2 ½ inches recorded in the Pensacola area of Yancey County.
Duke Energy mobilized 10,000 workers to respond to Ian and reports crews have repaired more than 950,000 power outages during Ian’s destructive path through the Carolinas. The company announced on Sunday that 97% of customers in the Carolinas had power restored by Sunday.
Four people have died in North Carolina in storm related incidents since Friday morning.
