William “Jack” Duncan passed peacefully in the early morning of October 12, at the age of 75. Jack was a lifelong resident of Weaverville NC.
He was a proud veteran of the US Army, having served in Korea.
Jack held several positions over his career, but none of which he was more proud of than having been Weaverville’s first Fire Marshall. In that position, he lobbied for legislation that required a prominent display of addresses to facilitate emergency service. When he left the Fire Service, he went to the National Park Service where he staffed a fire tower.
Jack was a great lover of the outdoors, always opting for jobs that kept him moving. He eventually became a security guard at the Biltmore Estate before retiring early to care for his ailing mother.
Jack is preceded in death by both of his parents, Walter Duncan, Jr. and Lula Adkins Duncan.
He is survived by many cousins and friends in Yancey and Buncombe Counties.
He was a member of the Grace Point Baptist Church.
His last years were spent working in his yard and battling groundhogs. Humble, kind, faithful, and principled, are but a few words that described Jack–but also stubborn, a family trait. He was a good friend and good cousin who cherished family ties. He was well-known in the Weaverville community and will be missed by all who knew him
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2022 in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Service. Officiating will be Rev. Harry Quiett. Interment will follow in the Adkins Cemetery with Military Writes Conducted by the Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter #57 D.A.V.
