Joe Dean (JD) Calloway, age 78, of Big Plumtree Creek Road in Newland, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.
Born on November 24, 1944 in Avery County, he was the son of the late Elmore and Bertha Benfield Calloway. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, John Calloway and an infant sister, Ruth Calloway.
JD was retired from Avery County where he worked with the Solid Waste Department. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was known as a “good ole’ mountain boy’. He also enjoyed traveling, sight-seeing and riding 4-wheelers.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter; Kimberly Calhoun and husband, Robert of Newland; his girlfriend, Anita Faye Love of Spruce Pine; his granddaughter; Brandy Calhoun of Newland; his brother; Jack Calloway and wife, Deborah of Newland; his sisters; Ruby Jolley and husband, Eugene of Georgia, Alice Buchanan of Bryson City, Rose Calloway of Bryson City, and Susie Stout and husband, Daniel of Roan Mountain, TN. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service for Joe Calloway at 2:00 pm Friday, November 4, 2022 at the Elk Mountain Freewill Baptist Church. A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends will be on Friday, November 4, 2022 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the Elk Mountain Freewill Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Elk Mountain Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to; Webb Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.
