The Yancey County Soil and Water Conservation District has been awarded $271,324 to redo over 60,000 linear feet of the Cane River that was damaged by Hurricane Fred. The funds will allow debris from the storm to either be chipped away or removed completely from the stream banks in the Pensacola area of the Cane River. A first round of cleanup was completed in July of this year. This next round will begin in early 2023.After this there will still be further work needed to totally restore the area and prevent further flooding events. Funding is through the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
