Mitchell Mountaineers Wrestling

The Mitchell Mountaineers kicked off their 2022-23 season Saturday at the Maroon Devil invitational, hosted by Swain High School. The tournament had varsity, women’s and JV divisions and was the first regular season action for the young Mountaineer team.
Mitchell’s varsity women were the bright spot Saturday, with all three Mountaineer ladies making the finals in their respective weights. Sophomore Madison Morales went 3-0 on the day and was the lone tournament champion for Mitchell. Senior Halley Wheeler and sophomore MacKenzie Barrett both went 2-1 and finished 2nd in their weight class. The women earned a 5th place finish as a team.
On the men’s side, junior Austin Styles finished 4th overall, going 2-2 for the day. Several other Mountaineers had individual wins, including freshmen Bryson McFalls and Noah Burke, along with senior Jayden Burleson.
JVs also saw good results, with Daren Hise going 3-0 in his first high school event for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers will be back in action at the prestigious North Knight Invitational Wednesday, November 23, with teams for NC, SC and TN in attendance.
