McDowell County Receives Grants For Transitional Housing

McDowell County will receive two grants, one for $5 million and one for $950,000, totaling almost $6 million to use toward providing affordable transitional housing and helping some county residents stay in their homes. The county has identified 40 occupied homes in need of emergency repairs. The first of these grants, $950,000, is for the purpose of providing repairs to those homes and making sure they are safe to occupy. The repairs will allow those occupants to remain in the houses which, otherwise, they may have been required to vacate. It also keeps the county from losing 40 affordable homes. The grant is a part of a broader $15.7 million in funds being made available by North Carolina for similar projects throughout the state. The second grant is $5 million to the county to build affordable transitional housing for those moving toward independent living. These funds will go towards building a 44-unit apartment facility to be spearheaded by Freedom Life Ministries.
