Rodney D. Buchanan, age 49, of the Newdale Community, passed away on Saturday, January 7th, 2023 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. He was born in Mitchell County to Eddie and Patricia Mitchell Buchanan and lived his entire life in Yancey County. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Hannah Williean Buchanan; grandparents: Bela and Ann McClellan Buchanan, and Carson and Lula Mae Fisher Mitchell; and aunts: Ruth Ann Murphy and Carrie Mae Mitchell. Rodney enjoyed fishing, deer hunting and old cars, but most of all enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren who loving called him Papaw Rodney.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his daughters: Alissa Renfro (Michael) of Lancaster, SC and Courtney Ray of Micaville; sons: Gage Daniels of Spruce Pine, Cody Buchanan of Burnsville, Christian Buchanan (Savannah) Burnsville and Jonathan Davis of Spruce Pine; brothers: Robert Buchanan (Darlene), Travis Buchanan (Misty) and Ronnie Buchanan (Amanda) of Elizabethton, TN; grandchildren: Kinsley Renfro, Aubrey Renfro, Nevaeh Renfro, Michael Renfro, Kinsey Ledford, Kooper Ledford, Ammelia Edwards, Izzy Buchanan, Kasper Pittman and Tucker Buchanan; and special cousin, Sondra Murphy. Many other extended family members also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 14th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Cephas Renfro will officiate. Burial will follow in the Pine Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
