Shop With Yancey Sheriff A Success

Yancey County Sheriff’s Office was able to make spirits a little brighter this Christmas season. Sheriff Shane Hilliard, deputies, staff, and volunteers were able to assist 100 kids in having a good Christmas. The money for the Shop with a Sheriff program comes from several fundraisers, the sale of ads for our Sheriff’s Office calendar, and generous donations from individuals, churches, and businesses in our community. With the help of our generous community, we spent a total of $29,696.12.

The children were selected to benefit from the Shop with a Sheriff program in coordination with Yancey County Schools.

The elementary kids were treated to lunch from Pig and Grits and taken to Walmart in Spruce Pine to hit the shopping racks.  The middle and high school kids were treated to lunch at Twisted Laurel in Weaverville and taken to Asheville to shop at various places.

Each child was given a limit to shop for themselves for Christmas.  Each child is encouraged to buy a pair of shoes, a warm coat, and new clothes including pants, shirts, sweatshirts/hoodies, socks, and underwear. With the money they have left they are able to buy toys or other items they may want (especially for the older kids).

“We look forward each year for the chance to help these kids have a little joy that they may not have otherwise and hopefully have a wonderful Christmas,” Said Sheriff Shane Hilliard. “We also want to recognize and say ‘Thank You!’ to our community for participating in our calendar fundraiser, as well as all the generous donations from area churches, several businesses, and community members. We are always amazed at the generosity of our community.”
