The Yancey-Mitchell NAACP held a Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on MLK Day, Monday January 16th in Spruce Pine.
NAACP members and other local community members gathered at 10:00 AM on the Highland Avenue Bridge, holding signs and singing songs honoring the life and legacy of Doctor King.
The assembled group marched peacefully across the bridge into downtown Spruce Pine on Oak Street, turning right onto Topaz Street and then marched down Locust Street back to the Highland Avenue bridge by 11:00 AM.
In a statement , the Yancey-Mitchell NAACP said, “In these politically divided times, we feel that it is an honor and a privilege to publicly celebrate this great civil rights leader’s work of bringing freedom, justice and unity to all Americans. May Dr. Kings legacy live on in all of us.”
