Maxi Gouge Buchanan

Maxi Gouge Buchanan, age 88, of Burnsville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 18th, 2023 at her home.  A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late W.O. and Fearol Woody Gouge.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Warren Buchanan, who passed away in 2017 and sisters-in-law: Grace Ellis (Harold), Nell Young (Joe), Christine Young (Jake), and Emma Lee Sparks (Eli).

Maxi retired from Mitchell County Department of Social Services.  Following retirement, she became a real estate agent.  She loved to travel, play golf, and collect original art pieces.  She, herself, was a very talented watercolor artist.

Surviving is her son, Thomas “Tommy” Buchanan, Jr. and wife, Susan Pendley Buchanan of Burnsville; grandson, Thomas Warren Buchanan III and wife, Amy Fitzgerald of Burnsville; great-granddaughter, Evelyn Rey; brother, Sherwood Gouge and wife, Linda of Bakersville; and special friend, Alan Adaschik of Green Mountain.  Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 22nd, at Yancey Funeral Services.  A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 23rd, in the Green B. Young (Greene Young) Cemetery in Bakersville.  Bob Hensley will officiate.
