Park W. Peterson, age 92, of the Tipton Hill Community, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 21st, 2023 at Ballad Hospital in Johnson City, TN. A native of Mitchell County, he was the son of the late James Peterson and Alice Honeycutt Peterson. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Madge Ingram Peterson; brothers: Brisco, Roy, Carl, Phin and twin brother, Raymond Peterson; and sisters: Eula, Evelyn, Carrie, Geneva and Birdie.
Park graduated Tipton Hill High School and ran his own general store in the Pigeon Roost area. He retired after 29 years from Henredon Furniture Company in Spruce Pine. He was a devoted member and Deacon of Huntdale Union Church for over 70 years. Park served his beloved church as song leader and superintendent. He loved to play the guitar, mandolin and sing. Along with his wife Madge, he sang in different quartets with friends over the years. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in the Korean War from 1950 until 1954 on USS Essex and Valley Forge Aircraft Carriers as a GM-3 Gunner Mate. Park loved his family, fishing, hunting, singing and playing his instruments but, most of all, he loved praising God and testifying in church.
Surviving is one son, Terry J. Peterson and wife, Marcella of Burnsville; two daughters: Teresa P. Ward and husband, Allen, of Burnsville, NC and Lisa P. Shuffler and husband, Brian, of Erwin, TN; five grandchildren: Brittany Bowman, Tamara Arrowood (Michael), Chelsey P. Whitfield (Joshua), Joshua S. Peterson and Noah T. Peterson; sister, Pansy Hagie of Kingsport, TN and five great-grandchildren: Hunter and Asher Arrowood, Colson Whitfield and two on the way.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 27th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Pastor Kenneth Murphy and Rev. Blaine Whitson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Flat Branch Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter #57 D.A.V. Pallbearers will be Joshua Peterson, Noah Peterson, Rodney Pate, Clinton Allen, James Hagie, Jerry Laws, Darrell Presnell, Steve Pate and Dallas Peterson.
