Thomas “Mickey” Hilliard, age 70, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 23rd, 2023 surrounded by his loving family and friends. A native of Yancey County, he was born on December 23rd, 1952 to the late Lawrence and Marie Hilliard. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Hilliard; brother, Nickey Hilliard and brother-in-law, Eugene Jarrett.
Mickey was a man of many talents. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning, and especially making his famous eggrolls for everyone. He loved his family and friends. Mickey was a loving father and grandfather, and was a mother and father to his daughter when Sarah passed away. He enjoyed going on vacation with his brother and sister. Mickey had a sense of humor, even on the worst of days, always trying to get a laugh.
Left to cherish all the wonderful memories is his daughter, Shanna Hensley (Chadd); grandson, Nick Silvers (Summer); granddaughter, Maddie Silvers; step-grandson, Drew Hensley; step-sons: Josh and Travis Garland; sister, Lou Etta Jarrett; and brothers: Rickey Hilliard (Suzy) and Johnny Hilliard (Diane). Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and special friends who loved and helped him so much: Kathy Ledford, Wanda Briggs, Kenneth Briggs, Earl Honeycutt and Stephanie Whitson as well as many others that have been there to help.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31st in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Kenneth Forbes, Rev. Ronnie Whitson and Rev. Derrick Hughes will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.
The family also wishes to thank Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge, and especially to Autumn Laws and Jamie Snell for all the wonderful love and care given to Mickey and our family during this difficult time. We appreciate each and everyone one of you. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family to help with expenses.
