I can remember when it wasn’t asking too much to have our leaders walk and chew gum at the same time. We don’t live in isolation from the whole world, never have. Those who seem to think we do are living in a delusion, a dream world, one that’s dangerous for other people now, the rest of us eventually. While I do agree that we have enough authoritarian bullies here at home to worry about, sitting back while the particular ones who speak Russian and Chinese overrun the world is a pretty good way in the long run to screw up any notions of “America first” or “we’re number one.” Laughter, out loud or in our own little cocoon, seems an ill advised response.
