Jackie Sue Caraway, age 81, of Newland, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 26th, 2023, at Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Kathleen Tucker Davis. She was also preceded in death by her husbands: A.J. Buchanan who was the father of her children, Ivan Whitson and Fin Caraway. Her brother, Tommy Tucker Davis, also preceded her.
Jackie loved camping, shopping, and making trips to Dollywood and the beach. She enjoyed celebrating birthdays, cooking, hosting cookouts, and was known as ‘The Tater Salad Lady’. Her greatest joy in life was being a foster parent and had a deep love for the foster children who became her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Roma Bennett (Kenneth) of Spruce Pine; her son, Martin Delaney Buchanan of Newland; two adopted daughters: Jennifer Ollis of Roan Mountain, TN and Jessica Benfield of Elk Park; five grandchildren: Michael, Brooke, Cortney, Christian, Ava; two great-grandchildren, Stella and Aspen, and one on the way; sister, Wanda Lee Stough (Melvin Goree) of Newland; brother-in-law, Dale Buchanan of Lincolnton; two sisters-in-law: Willa Davis of Buck Mountain and Virginia Keaton of Valdese; friend and cousin, Geraldine Woody; and her best traveling buddy, Sabrina Briggs. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and several cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 11th at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
