I grew up in Alabama, all of my family is from Alabama or Mississippi. I live in Mitchell County now. The only reason I see these posts is because I check the obituaries in my community and click on this forum to see what people are saying. I do it before I go to work or after I finish puttering with one of my hobbies. Sometimes it helps me understand the misconceptions I encounter when I’m out in the community among my neighbors, some of whom are more engaged than others when it comes to change here, in the state and in the country. It’s always just a huge reminder of why I came there. It’s a place where I can get to know my neighbors in beautiful mountains among many who, like me, grew up in a rural place. I will admit that it’s probably a bit easier here than back in Alabama or Mississippi. I think that’s because I don’t have family here and didn’t graduate from high school with anyone here! I have so many ways to continue to be connected with those folks back there without having to worry about what my mamma will say if I disagree with my cousin or the lady who does her hair about who should be able to run for school board and then try to do something about it.
