Visitors to Yancey County could soon be paying more taxes when they stay overnight. The North Carolina General Assembly is considering a bill that would allow Yancey County to increase its tax on hotels and overnight rentals by 3 percent. The current overnight tax is 3 percent, so the increase would bring the total to 6 percent.
According to county officials, the increase would bring the county in line with state standards and on par with other North Carolina counties.
Burnsville-Yancey Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Christy Wood said this would benefit the county and help with things like trail maintenance and infrastructure issues. A bulk of the new funds would be earmarked for advertising and marketing.
The bill has already cleared the House and is now being considered by the Senate Rules Committee. If it clears the Senate, it’ll make its way to Gov. Roy Cooper for his signature.
