As an employer…

Over time when I’ve had a job to fill I’ve occasionally run into a problem. I often have trouble finding qualified applicants with the capacity to learn the skills needed in that position. I’ve had great young interns, many of them Mayland Community College students or students home from college for the summer. Some have been brought to the area by the opportunities to learn traditional craft or agriculture. But more and more it seems those young people have to leave the area to find full time employment with decent enough pay to find a place to live. But when I have a full-time or even a part-time job to offer that pays well, I’m usually able to fill that job with fine young people, retirees who still want or need to work, or even middle aged folks who went back to school to learn something new. Most are a delight to work with and we mentor them professionally before they move on to greater responsibility in other jobs, sometimes in our community, but sometimes away, unfortunately. I can’t imagine what it must be like for employers who aren’t paying that well or who have not so great working conditions. They must have a hard time filling jobs.
