I lived and worked in Columbia, SC, as well as various parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Arizona and Texas. I witnessed and was part of extremely bad implementation of affirmative action policies in hiring and firing many, many times, especially when working in and around state government. There was never any “reverse racism” no matter how many people want to live in a bubble of delusion. There were all kinds of people treated very badly by government that was either poorly implementing or resisting implementation of very badly thought through and written policy. Usually, in my experience, the badly written and implemented policy was designed to deflect accountability for making good equitable employment choices. No one who knew what they were talking about at that time was confusing reparations with affirmative action as it was enacted it into law. Lots of people trying not to talk about one linked it to the other. It was sometimes used to justify avoiding talking about all kinds of “isms.” I am grateful that no one alive today was involved in slavery. I just keep wondering why some folks keep believing anyone is saying they were. What kind of victim mentality does that? It seems to be blatant fabrication or misdirection. Hard to tell which since it makes no sense. But, I don’t really expect it to get better anytime soon. The people who play that card along with the ones about laziness and work ethic seem pretty committed to their defensive fantasies, their justifications for their own perceived failures, or their rabble rousing with known untruths or spin. Buckle up, cause whichever it is, they seem committed to making the rest of us have to go on this ugly dangerous ride with them.
