Brock Duncan and Ryan Cook with Mitchell County’s Recreation Department recognized Larry and Anita Fortner for their many years of work and support for recreation activities in the county. “Larry and Anita have been a constant. They’ve been nothing but good, done nothing but helped us,” according to Duncan. The department presented them with an award, thanking them for their “friendship, loyalty, and devotion.”

Mitchell Senior Center Director Kathy Garland presents a bouquet to Norma Duncan for her work supporting senior citizens and advocating for their needs through work in the Senior Tar Heel Legislature program.

Kathy Garland, Director of the Mitchell County Senior Center, recognized Norma Duncan for her work for and support of the senior citizen community of Mitchell County. “Norma fills a role that is really difficult. It’s a volunteer job that involves a lot of phone calls and meetings, and she has been a wonderful advocate for the needs of our senior citizens in Mitchell County.” Garland noted that Duncan has served for 13 of the 30 years that the Senior Tar Heel Legislature program has been in existence. This group engages legislature members and North Carolina government agencies over issues that affect seniors economically, medically, and socially.
