Walter Tipton, age 97, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 25th, 2023 at The Greens of Spruce Pine. A native of Mitchell County, he was the daughter of the late Willard and Mafra McCurry Tipton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Holcombe. He was a WWII Army/Air Force Veteran, where he earned a Pilot Wings Flight Engineer and Aircraft Mechanic award. He was in the Cadet Program serving as engineer and emergency co-pilot on B-24, B-29 and PBY navy patrol bombers, waiting to be deployed to the Pacific when World War II ended. He also earned awards for Theater of Operations, Good Conduct Medal and Expert Marksman. Walter was a member of Windom United Methodist Church and worked at Eaton Corporation where he retired. He loved to fish, work on lawn mowers and was a jack-of-all-trades.
Surviving is his daughter, Andrea Jane Tipton; special caregiver, Telina Burge and husband, Ross; cousins: Tony Tipton and wife, Vickie, Ted Tipton and wife, Wanda Hope and Terry Tipton and wife, Maureen.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
