Bruce Leon McKinney, age 85, of Dale Road in Spruce Pine, the Grassy Creek community, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2023 at the Mitchell House in Spruce Pine.
Born on February 27, 1938 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Lee and Opal Ellis McKinney. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Florence Woody.
Bruce was a member of the Grassy Creek Baptist Church and was the owner of McKinney Electric for forty years.
He was adventurous and loved exploring caves. He also loved Old Time Bluegrass music and clogging. He enjoyed Nascar racing and rafting. In addition to spending time with his family, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandson, Austin.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of sixty-three years; Shirley Parsley McKinney of the home; his son; Scott McKinney and wife, Angie of Spruce Pine; his grandson; Austin McKinney and wife, Nicole of Spruce Pine; his great granddaughter; Charli Mae McKinney; his great grandson; Dallin McKinney; his sisters; Loraine Campbell and husband, Joe of Spruce Pine and Irene Poteat of Hickory; his nephews; Cody Hinkle and Kenneth Woody and wife, Joyce; and many nieces and nephews.
A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends will be on Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Grassy Creek Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Grassy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev’s. Nathan Silver, Larry Greene and Austin McKinney officiating. Inurnment will be in the Grassy Creek Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to the staff of the Mitchell House Memory Care Unit and caregivers and Mike Collis for their care of Bruce during his illness.
