Red Cross recognizes unsung leaders who exemplify humanitarian values
The American Red Cross Western NC Chapter will host a Salute to Heroes Breakfast at Highland Brewing Company on June 7 at 8:30 a.m. This event pays tribute to the extraordinary acts of courage, kindness and volunteerism of men and women in our communities. WLOS News 13 and Chief Meteorologist Jason Boyer will serve as the emcee of the Salute to Heroes celebration.
“We are honored to highlight the individuals who support the values of our mission at the fourth annual Salute to Heroes. These community members lead with empathy and compassion,” said Mariana Vimbela, executive director, Western NC chapter. “It is our privilege to salute the selfless humanitarians who serve to help make our communities better.”
The chapter will honor those who have served in the following categories:
- The Dottie Burton Blood Services Hero Award: Edmund Doughty, Disaster Cycle Services
- Community Impact Hero Award: Centro Unido Latino Americano
- Law Enforcement Hero Award: Det. Paige Shell, Waynesville Police Department
- Firefighter Hero Award: Chief Niles Howell, West Yancey Volunteer Fire
- Nurse Hero Award: Joe Healy, CarePartners PACE
- Disaster Services Hero Award: Vonnie DuRant, Disaster Cycle Services
- Military Veteran Hero Award: Pearson Riddle, Jr., WWII Marine Veteran
- Good Samaritan Hero Award: Lisa Clark, Mission Health Asheville Surgery Center
- Emergency Medical Services Hero Award: Stephanie Austin, Skyland EMS
