Jack Gregory “Greg” Grindstaff took his last breath in Asheville, NC on June 7th, 2023, at the age of 69 years. He was born in Mitchell County, North Carolina and remained a resident of Mitchell and Yancey Counties when he was able to be home. He always had a passion for being the fastest/best at whatever he felt a passion for, whether it was welding or racing.
The man was a citizen of the world, but appreciated the most when he was home in his mountains with family. He worked as a welder for most of his life, but strived to work his way to the next level in every aspect of the art. He became a member of the Pipefitters Union Local 421 and supported his brotherhood until his dying day. He has many students and respected peers across the world that know his name as one of the best welders, if not THE best that ever lived. He loved competition and teaching skilled techniques, while performing what most considered “the impossible”. His incredible sense of humor and leadership abilities will always be remembered across his lifetime’s work. He was a lover of animals and spent many of his last days relaxing and caring for his pets: Sadie, Toby and Socks.
He was predeceased by his parents Betty Jo and Jack Grindstaff. He is survived by his loving sister Patty Chrisawn (David), his oldest son Jonathan (Kristy), darling daughter Katie, youngest son Matthew and stepson James Pate (Jamie), Nieces/Nephews (April, Adam, Payton, Sophie), Grandchildren Ava, Olivia, and Dayton; and his loving fiancé who cared for him in his final days: Sheila Jarrett White and her daughter; Dena Hoilman.
