Irene Gouge Henson, age 72, of Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 18th, 2023 at her home.
A native of Fredrick, MD, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Marcella Duncan Gouge. She was also preceded in death by sister, Bernice Gouge and brothers: Alan Duncan, Donald Gouge, Henry Gouge and Ray Gouge. Irene was a kind and loving wife, mother and Granny. She enjoyed music, flowers, butterflies and going to flea markets and yard sales. Irene was a strong woman, hard worker and kind friend who never met a stranger and will be loved and dearly missed by all who knew her.
Surviving is her loving husband of 40 years, Bobby “Bob” Henson; son, Tony Pittman and wife, Laura, of Spruce Pine; step-son, Bobby Henson and girlfriend, Lisa, of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren: Cole Pittman, Kyle Pittman, Robby, Leah and Josh Long; three great-grandchildren; twin sister, Ileane Burleson and husband, Rusty, of Bakersville; sister, Carol Ann Robinson and husband, Jeff, of Bakersville; brother, Carl Gouge of Bakersville; twin brothers: Kenneth Duncan, who she raised as a son, and wife, Sandy, of Morganton, and Keith Duncan and wife, Rhonda, of Morganton, and a sisters-in-law: Barbara Pendley and husband, Phillip, of South Toe and Teresa Smith of Marion. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21st in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Hospice Chaplain Larry Greene will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Private burial will be in the Bear Creek Cemetery.
