Philip Joseph O’Toole, age 94, of Spruce Pine, passed away Friday, June 16, 2023 at the Greens of Spruce Pine.
Born on December 23, 1928 in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late Francis and Phyllis Ann Sampson O’Toole. He was also preceded in death by the love of his life whom he was married to for fifty-five years, Mary O’Toole. Also preceding him in death was his sisters; Phyllis English and husband, Howard and Patricia O’Toole and his daughter; Maureen O’Toole.
Philip was a veteran of the Korean War. He worked for thirty-seven years for I.T.T. Continental Baking Company in Massachusetts and Maryland that produces baked goods including Hostess, Wonder Breads and Honeybuns. He worked his way up from scraping trays to management positions. He had a second career in security in the Baltimore, MD area.
Once retired, he spent many hours volunteering at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Baltimore as well as at Homewood of Williamsport Retirement Community. He loved spending time with family, dog and buddy; Peanut, traveling, model trains and airplanes, taking steam train rides, working puzzles, and eating ice cream.
Philip had a love of life, a big heart, and the best smile that lit up a room. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.
Left to cherish his memory is his children; Michael O’Toole and wife, Patricia of Georgia; Marcia Hryckiewicz and husband, Steve of Virginia and Margaret O’Toole-Lualdi and husband, Anthony of Linville, NC; his brother; Edward O’Toole and wife, Marlene of Florida; his sister; Patricia O’Toole of Massachusetts; his grandchildren; Catherine and Matthew Miro of Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be planned later in Baltimore, MD.
