One person is dead and others were injured following a canoe accident this weekend on the North Toe River.
Mitchell County authorities confirmed Sunday afternoon, July 2, that a tree fell on a canoe, causing the accident.
A N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission spokesperson said a woman is dead, and her husband and child were injured, after a tree fell on the family while they were canoeing Sunday.
It happened at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday near Penland.
The father and child are both at Mission Hospital, with the father having to be airlifted earlier there.
There was no word on their injuries Sunday night, and no other details have been made available.
NCWRC is investigating the incident.
