A wildfire started by a lightning strike in a storm Friday evening, July 28th, continues to burn in McDowell County. The fire is located near the Linville Gorge at Dobson Knob #2 near the North Cove community. The fire was estimated at 6 acres Saturday, according to the US Forest Service. Several hiking trails are closed, and rangers urged drivers on U.S. 221 North in McDowell County to use caution.
The fire is burning in a rocky, remote area that has a history of wildfires. Initial firefighting efforts focused on protecting private property and any nearby structures. Currently the fire is burning on US Forest Service lands and a small portion of private property. No structures are at immediate risk. A large number of downed, dead trees were fueling hot spots, according to the service. To protect the public and firefighters, trail closures are in place for the Mountains to Sea Trail from the north fork of the Catawba River to Dobson Knob Road on the west side of Linville Gorge.
25 firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service, North Carolina Forest Service, McDowell County Emergency Management, and the North Cove Volunteer Fire Department are responding.
