There was a House Bill 844 Free Lunch For All proposed this year in the NC House of Representatives. Unfortunately for Yancey and other county students, whose district level leadership chose not to participate for the betterment of their students, the bill did not pass. However, there is still a glimmer of hope for these families and students. The following is a direct quote from Representative Julie von Haefen NC House District 36, Wake County.
“Republican leadership is still working on the state budget behind closed doors, and they could choose to include the funding to expand the school meals program if they so decided. You could contact the state budget conferees listed to advocate for them to have school meal funding in the budget.”

Though our local leaders dropped the ball, reach out to leaders at the state level and request them to include school meal funding in this year’s state budget.
