While people do, indeed, seem to like to bicker, there are many systematic reasons why school lunches are often something you don’t want to feed your kids and why kids who “need” free lunch don’t get it. The bickering here seems to be among people who have no idea about the history and implementation of the federal school lunch program and how it plays out in localities in states like North Carolina. It’s not about socialism, or even capitalism, anyone’s mistaken ideas about either one, or the bickering about who to blame. It’s about a really screwed up system that is supposed to make sure kids don’t go hungry. It’s screwed up no matter who is running it in my experience both as a child and as an informed adult who has worked with and around it for 20 years.
