YCS Superintendent and 4 Board of Education Members are not telling the true story behind the DRAFTING Teacher position at Mtn Heritage. The new Applied Engineering program that was announced on WKYK today as “Exciting News” is nothing new. This news story is plotted to “appear” transparent, but this information is neither news or a “New Program” offered through Mayland Community College. The truth is the drafting position was never filled by a qualified candidate. Any person that has the education and qualifications for this important position will not take a pay cut to be a teacher. In the best interest of the students of Yancey County, students no longer have the availability to take courses within the walls of MHHS. The Applied Engineering Degree program that is being publicized as a new program for students to take advantage of with “advanced drafting courses” is nothing new. Students have ALWAYS had the opportunity to do these same drafting related courses in “conjunction with” those that were taught at MHHS. This Applied Engineering Degree program has ALWAYS been available for students to work toward while enrolled at MHHS.
THIS IS NOTHING NEW.
The Superintendent of Yancey County Schools and these boards members want you to believe they are doing our children a favor by providing this new and innovative idea. The truth is this is the only option NOW for students interested in pursuing a drafting related career area. What are the options for 9th and 10th grade students that do not have a driver’s license in order to drive to Mayland? As a parent, even if bus/van transportation was provided for my 14–16-year-old, I would not want my daughter to go to a college campus (basically unsupervised) when tax paid dollars could have provided a teacher at the high school campus. It is time the parents of Yancey County take back our schools from this Superintendent and the board that have motives that are not meeting the central needs of our children. Public relations and publicity are much more important anymore in Yancey County than the value of a good education. It is time to take a stand for the future generations attending YCS.
