Charles Crain

Charles Crain, 69, of Possum Trot, passed away on August 17, 2023, after a brief illness.

A native of Yancey County, he was born on August 23, 1953, to the late Bill and Pauline Crain. He is preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Vickie, who passed away in 2014, an infant son, McDaniel, and two brothers Ronald Tomberlin and Stanley Crain.

Charles loved to go on walkabouts throughout the woods on his property, digging ramps in the spring and “hunting” deer in the fall. When not on his journeys, he could most often be found playing his guitar in his room or on his porch. His knowledge of 60s music was beyond compare, and he even wrote and published a gospel song, Set Free.

He was a Jack of all trades, ranging from auto work, construction, and painting houses amongst many other hobbies.

Charles was an avid story teller (although the accuracy of his stories were often in question, despite his claims otherwise — did he really invent the helicopter then invent the lawn mower by flying the helicopter upside down???) and could tell jokes that would have you laughing for days. His two best pieces of advice for anyone were: “can’t never could nothing” and “you know what, it’s like this…and if you turn it over, it’s like that”.

Charles is survived by his children, Cindy Crain and Jeremiah Crain both of Burnsville, and Joe Crain, of Fairfax County, Virginia; two grandsons, Edward and Andrew Blevins, and a great grand daughter, Victoria, all of Burnsville. Charles is also survived by 5 sisters, Scarlet Bradley, Doris Lyda (Richard), Nadeine Shelton (Kenneth), Donna Kay Crain, and Mary Ann Grindstaff, one brother, Morris Crain (Denise), a brother-in-law, Timmy Grindstaff and Kenneth Collins (Teresa), special brother and cousins, many nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 22nd, in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services at 12 noon. A private burial will follow.
