When I was going to a rural mountain school in the 60s and 70s it was pretty much like it is today in some ways. Like school kids today, I was not “encouraged” to hide anything from my parents that was discussed with a teacher or counselor. My parents did have to worry about indoctrination, though. But after some good conversations with the principals, some teachers stopped trying to make us all into fundamentalist Christians. While they meant well, they were stomping on our parents’ rights. People minded their own business and didn’t worry about the gender of other people’s kids. My how things have changed and not for the better. We’ve got people who do not want our kids educated, they want them indoctrinated into a fundamentalist belief system that the parents of those kids do not want.
