Melvin A. Goree

Heaven got a new Angel on Wednesday, October 4th, 2023 when Melvin A. Goree passed away.  A native of Fayette, Alabama, he was a son of the late Johnnie and Vaudell Porter Goree.  He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille ‘Cille’ Goree; infant granddaughter, April Bell; brother, Earl Goree and his wife, Kathleen; a sister, Clemmie Nelson and husband, Donald.

Melvin was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church for more than 12 years.  He loved to garden and had a ‘green thumb’. His garden was amazing, producing over 200 cans of green beans.  He was a very caring, giving person and, at one point, he grew enough vegetables to feed the entire town.  He had a dog, Daisy Mae, that he loved dearly.  Melvin was a great father, grandfather, husband and friend, and was loved by all who knew him.  He told his family more than once that he was ready to meet Jesus.  He will be truly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Wanda Davis Stough; son, Ronnie and wife, Barbara; daughter, Debbie Bell and husband, Mike; two grandsons: Chris Bell and wife, Laurie, and Josh Bell and wife, Brenda; three great-grandchildren: Easton, Wyatt and Sawyer Bell; three sisters: Linda Reedy and husband, Stanley; Alpha Williams and husband, Billy; and Patsy Hocutt and husband, Johnny.

A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, October 7th at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Remington Austin officiating.  A second memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 18th at Aliceville Memorial Gardens in Pickens County, Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Children’s Fund at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 471 N US 19E Hwy, Newland, NC  28657.  To send online condolences, please visit our website at www.yanceyfuneralservice.com.
