The NC Department of Instruction recently released accountability results for the 2022-23 school year. Yancey County Schools continued to show progress and recovery from learning loss due to the COVID shutdown. YCS ranked #9 out of 100 county school districts in the NC Public School System for Proficiency in EOG and EOC, as well as #5 in the Northwest and Western regions. All of YCS schools received a letter grade of B or C, meaning they do not have any low performing schools, and 6 out of 7 of our schools met or exceeded growth for 2022-23.
Superintendent Kathy Amos was very pleased with these results. “I am incredibly proud of every student, teacher, support staff member and principal as we celebrate our testing results,” stated Superintendent Amos. “Our proficiency scores in reading, math and science continue to be above state and regional scores. It takes a team effort at every level to meet students where they are and grow them academically during a school year. We still have a few areas to tweak; however, I applaud your outstanding work and look forward to celebrating with you over the next few weeks and months.”
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt said last year’s accountability results show that schools remain on track to recover from the significant setbacks caused by COVID-19.
“It’s hard to overstate the impact of the pandemic,” Truitt said, “but teachers across North Carolina are working harder than ever to help students recover, and more importantly, advance in their learning. We owe them our gratitude for meeting this challenge to improve outcomes for students.”
Yancey County Schools continue to out-perform state and regional averages in almost every grade level and subject area. YCS achieved a 63.3% level of proficiency ranking for all subjects and all students. This score is well above the Western region proficiency of 57% and the State average of 54%.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Heather Cox shared her feelings about these results. “I am extremely proud of our students, teachers and administrators for the academic gains that have been made this past year. I am also very grateful for parents and families who have supported their students and schools throughout the school year. We continue to see growth and increased proficiency across all grade levels thanks to hardworking students, teachers and administrators.”
YCS students who were in 3rd grade last year ranked in the top 5 in NC county public schools for combined overall EOG proficiency and #3 in NC for math proficiency. Our 8th grade math once again came in 1st place in NC. Grades 9-12 subjects with EOC’s landed in 2nd place in NC with Biology repeating at #1 statewide, and Math 1 and Math 3 both ranking #4 in the northwest and western regions.
“We love seeing our students and teachers perform well,” shared Yancey County Board of Education Chairman Edwin Fortner. “We are thankful for the dedication and hard work of all YCS employees in creating great atmospheres for our students to thrive. The Board of Education will continue to support, recognize and honor all of the people who make Yancey County Schools a great place to work and learn.”
