16 Hour Rescue of Bear Hunter in McDowell County

It took more than 60 emergency personnel, a Blackhawk helicopter, Mission helicopter, drones and other bear hunter volunteers to rescue a missing bear hunter in McDowell County.  McDowell County Emergency officials said a man went missing Wednesday night, October 25th, while bear hunting deep in the Pisgah National Forest. The hunter suffered a fall on Wednesday in the forest just northeast of Old Fort in the Curtis Creek Road area, which then led to the 16-hour search and rescue mission. A helicopter from the North Carolina National Guard performed a technical rescue by hoisting the patient from the forest floor shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, McDowell County Emergency Services said. The Black Hawk that extricated the hunter then met Mission Health’s helicopter at the staging site to make the transfer. This is the first time in McDowell County history that a Black Hawk has been used for an emergency extraction. The hunter is reported to have serious injuries.
