Charles Robert ‘Bob’ Mickles

Charles Robert ‘Bob’ Mickles, age 89, of Walnut Street in Spruce Pine, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Care Partners Solace Center in Asheville.

Born on December 12, 1933 in Dade County, FL, he was the son of the late Charles and Doris Kennedy Mickles.

Bob graduated Miami Senior High School in 1953. Following his high school graduation, he attended Brewton-Parker Baptist College. In July of 1955 he joined the U.S. Air Force and served there until 1963.

Following his time in the Air Force, he worked as a salesman with Hector Supply, Airwork Corp and later worked with the space program in Huntsville, AL. He also worked for the Metro Dade Parks Department as Parks manager.

In 1967, his fiancé’ and the love of his life, Lindy Gibbons was tragically killed in an automobile accident. He continued his education and graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Landscape Design. In 1991 he moved to Mitchell County and the town of Spruce Pine. He worked with the Special Needs program and retired after twenty years of service.

Left to cherish his memory is his sisters; Nancy Gaines of Florida and Iris Thirtle and husband, Jim of Sarasota, FL; his niece; Nancy Sue Maxwell of Florida; and his nephews; Todd and Mace.

Graveside services and internment will be on Wednesday, November 1, 2013 at 11:00 am in the Pendley Cemetery in Spruce Pine.
