On Veterans Day, Saturday November 11, Mountain Piecemakers Quilters will present approximately fifty hand crafted quilts to honor our veteran heroes. The ceremony begins at noon on the Burnsville Town Square during the Flags for Heroes celebration which is sponsored by Burnsville Rotary. The ceremony will honor veterans from all branches of service. Letters have been mailed to the veterans who will be receiving quilts this year inviting them and their families to the presentation. Seating will be available for the veterans receiving quilts near the stage.
The quilters make these quilts annually to express our gratitude to our veterans from Yancey, Mitchell and Madison Counties for their service. Members of the Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild have made over 500 Hero quilts during past eleven years. Each veteran receives a quilt made especially for them.
In support of this cause, Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild has constructed a beautiful queen size opportunity quilt which can be viewed at our booth on Veterans Day. Proceeds from the ticket sales help defray expenses for fabric and quilting of these patriotic quilts. Tickets for the opportunity quilt can be purchased at our booth during the Flags for Heroes event. Donations are always appreciated. A donation container will be located at the Mountain Piecemakers booth. The drawing for the opportunity quilt will be held at the Flags for Heroes celebration on November 11. Winners need not be present. The quilt will be shipped if needed to the winner.
For those looking to nominate a veteran for future quilt presentations, nomination forms will be available at the Mountain Piecemakers booth at the presentation. If you would like to nominate a veteran who lives in Madison, Mitchell or Yancey counties, stop by the booth near the stage and pick up a form. Information needed includes the veteran’s name, address, phone, branch and period of service. An ongoing list of nominated veterans is maintained and annually the guild donates approximately 50 quilts to honor our veterans for their service. Priority is given to World War 2 and Korean veterans.
Mountain Piecemakers wants to thank the Mountain Air Community Fund, Burnsville Rotarians, Yancey Journal, Yancey Graphics, Mitchell News, Avery Journal and WKYK/WTOE for their support in making this Hero Quilt presentation possible. Our veterans deserve nothing but the best and we are proud to be part of this day. It is our privilege to honor them in this way. We urge everyone to join us on the Town Square on November 11, at noon as we stand together to honor and celebrate our veterans.
