Joint Animal Shelter for Mitchell and Avery

Mitchell and Avery counties in collaboration with Mayland Community College recently held groundbreaking for a joint animal shelter on the main college campus in Spruce Pine. The new facility will serve both counties but will operate under Mitchell County Animal Rescue’s license with their board of directors. Eventually there will be a dual board of directors and the name will reflect the two county collaboration. The new facility will help meet the needs of both counties while also supporting Mayland’s Veterinary Assisting program. Amber Lowry, Executive Director of Mitchell County Animal Rescue said, “We’re thankful for the state’s approval of a grant for the new facility.” The new building will prioritize animal welfare with better facilities for the animals, including walking trails on the Mayland campus and better services for both communities. Mayland will be able to align its Veterinary Assisting program with needs of the shelter.
