David Michael Cantrell, age 60, of the Penland Community, went Home to be with Jesus on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Cleo and Joyce Church Cantrell. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Roger Cantrell.
He had a deep love and was very devoted to his church, Estatoe Church of God, where he was a member and served as Superintendent for a number of years. He was a correctional officer at Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institute for 21 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and whittling. David loved his family dearly and would often tell his children, “Always stop and tell yourself, look what a beautiful day Jesus has made and keep your eyes to the sky.” His bright outlook on life and his smile will be cherished by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Diane Hoyle Cantrell of Penland; two daughters: Jennifer Lowery of Penland and Emily Cantrell (Johnny Ledford) of Spruce Pine; son, Matthew Cantrell of Penland; six grandchildren: Dylan Michael Lowery (Jaiden), David Hunter Lowery, Jaden Linn Lowery, Greyson Drake Cantrell, Mahaela Lily-Grace Ledford and Bryson Michael Ledford; brother, Ricky Cantrell (Pat) of Clemson, SC; and two sisters: Judy Pittman and Mary McKinney, both of Morganton. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends survive as well.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 7th at Estatoe Church of God. Rev. Chris Greene and Pastor Mark Stout will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
