Two people on board a small plane that crashed on Interstate 26, last night around 8:30pm, escaped with non-life-threatening injuries.
They reported to the control tower that the plane had about half power and there was smoke in the cockpit.
The plane’s occupants can then be heard telling the tower they would probably have to put down on the freeway.
The plane was attempting to make it to the Asheville Airport when it had to land on the interstate between Long Shoals Road and Airport Road.
The Control Tower reported the plane was on the ground and the two passengers made it out before it caught on fire. The plane was engulfed in flames.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the plane hit power lines that cross I-26 and one wing hit a tractor-trailer. Duke Energy worked until around 11pm last night restoring power to around 3000 customers.
