There was a tragic accident Wednesday afternoon (Dec 27) in the parking lot of the Mars Hill post office.
A 65 year old retired math teacher was fatally struck by a U.S. Postal Service truck. The man, accompanied by his wife, was getting his mail when the incident occurred. The postal truck was backing up into the alley behind the building and hit the victim, who was walking behind it. The victim’s wife had safely crossed the alley, which connects the parking area to the post office.
The police received a call at 2:48 p.m. Mars Hill Police Chief Chad Wilson said the couple resides in Marshall and has a post office box.
It’s routine for USPS trucks to reverse into the back parking lot for mail loading. The authorities are investigating the accident, focusing on safety measures and looking at different options.
The police chief considers it an accident but plans to discuss with the district attorney. The truck driver expressed remorse over the accident.
