Pisgah Legal Loses Federal Grants

Pisgah Legal Services may have to make significant cuts to its domestic violence survivor programs after losing funding from several federal grants. Pisgah Legal Services is a legal aid organization that serves Mitchell and Yancey, among other western North Carolina counties, providing free civil legal aid to low income WNC residents. They consult with clients to fight evictions, arrange health insurance and find protection from domestic violence. For the new year, Pisgah Legal faces a $1 million funding shortfall that was previously filled by the federal Crime Victims Fund, Violence Against Women Act and American Rescue Plan.  To make up for the shortage, Pisgah Legal and other organizations unsuccessfully lobbied Raleigh legislators. These organizations are now looking to counties and donors for help to keep the domestic violence survivor programs going.
