Typically insurance companies don’t get the drastic rate increases they ask for. It appears the coastal counties and a few farther inland may get the biggest increase. These areas are the most vulnerable to hurricanes. Thanks to our local volunteer firefighters who have worked hard to improve their protection class ratings, our area shouldn’t see drastic rate increases. We saved $200 because our fire department went from a Class 9 to a Class 5. We can do our part by working to prevent claims by proper maintenance and preventive maintenance. Some of the biggest claims in our area are from water damage from broken pipes. I suggest you carry a high deductible ( that you feel comfortable with) and avoid small frequent claims. Also, make sure you try to maintain a good credit score which will drastically impact your rates. Let your agent know when you’ve done updates such as a new roof or installed a security system. These suggestions may do more good than protests. Hang in there and contact your agent for more helpful advice. |
Regarding my previous response to the original post, I should have clarified that in addition to preventative measures, voicing your concerns about rate hikes is not discouraged but encouraged in conjunction with these measures to be most effective.
