On January 3rd, Double Island Fire Department met all requirements set forth by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services to respond to medical emergencies in the Double Island Community at the Advanced EMT level. Advanced Life Support (ALS) is a set of life-saving protocols and skills that extend beyond Basic Life Support (BLS). This skill set is used to provide emergent treatment to cardiac, respiratory, neurological and other serious medical conditions. This certification will add nine additional lifesaving medications as well as nine additional lifesaving skills. “This was no easy task to complete from the application process to the final phase of the vehicle inspection. We are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication that Double Island Fire Department has shown to increase their level of response to their community” stated Kristy Bryant, Yancey County EMS Director. Yancey Rescue and Newdale Fire Department have also achieved ALS certification.
