In loving memory of Edward Stephen ‘Steve’ Ballew, born on July 9, 1951 to the late Edward and Mary Ballew and passed away peacefully at his home in Conroe, Texas on December 27, 2023.
Steve, a proud native of Spruce Pine, North Carolina, cultivated his roots in a close-knit community. After graduating from Harris High School, he pursued his education in Winston-Salem, NC, attending Wake Forest University, where he became a proud member and brother of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. After graduation in 1973, Steve joined the United States Marine Corps where he excelled as a pilot and later flight instructor for helicopters and fighter jets. He displayed unwavering dedication to his country.
Following his distinguished military service, Steve embarked on a career with Continental Airlines, where he soared through the skies for over twenty years, retiring as a captain. After retiring, he embraced a simple and relaxed life in Lake Conroe, Texas, finding solace in his love for aviation, firearms, and the USMC. His days were marked by a strict schedule, enjoying a good cup of coffee, watching history shows, relishing in a delicious burger, and cherishing moments with friends at the local spot, Bertha’s Cafe. Steve’s journey also included a devoted recovery within AA, a testament to his strength, resilience, and commitment to personal growth and faith.
Steve’s legacy lives on through his son, Clayton Taylor (Vallie Gilley) Ballew and he is survived by his sister; Suzanne Ballew Russell and brother; John Ballew. He will be missed by his family, both immediate and extended and by his many friends and comrades.
A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends will be on Friday, January 19, 2024 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the Grassy Creek Baptist Church. The funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 19, 2024 at the Grassy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathan Silver officiating.
