Marie Howell Buchanan, age 88, of Arbuckle, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 16th, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loving family. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Edd and Ruby Smith Howell and wife of the late Lealon Buchanan, who passed away in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Herman and Maisie Robinson Howell and grandson-in-law, Clay Autrey. Marie was a life-time member of Youngs Chapel Baptist Church where she was the pianist. She loved singing, reading her Bible, going to church, working crossword puzzles, being with her children but especially loved being with her great-grandson Lachlan.
Surviving are her children: Carroll R. Buchanan and wife, Cynthia, of Grassy Creek, Duane E. Buchanan and wife, Linda, of Arbuckle, Kimberly D. Buchanan of Arbuckle and Michelle D. Buchanan of the home; granddaughters: Allisyn D. Smith and husband, Aaron, of Arbuckle and Lauren E. Buchanan-Autrey of Spruce Pine and a great-grandson, Lachlan K. Smith. Several nieces, nephews and extended family also survive.
A private graveside will be held at a later date in the Youngs Chapel Cemetery with Pastor Andy Willis and Rev. Lawrence Glenn officiating.
