My mamma never said “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything.” She grew up poor and had a healthy skepticism regarding who got to decide what was nice. She taught me not to ever lie and to speak up when people do, even if someone says it’s not “nice.” Just don’t be mean for the heck of it. Those have been very good words to live by. No regrets.
