Tragic Accident in Madison County Kills High School Student

Another tragic accident occurred in Madison County Tuesday morning, January 30th.  A 17 year old Madison County High School student, Kyera Byas, was killed around 8 am in a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 213 between Marshall and Mars Hill.  North Carolina Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation shows a passenger vehicle was attempting to make a left turn onto the highway from a private drive and failed to yield to a utility truck traveling toward Mars Hill. The utility truck hit the passenger car on the driver’s side door, then traveled left of the center, side swiping a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. All vehicles then came to a stop on the highway. There were two people inside the passenger car, including the 17-year-old female driver who was pronounced dead at the scene and an 18-year-old female who was transported to Mission Hospital with injuries. Highway Patrol said at last check, the female was in critical condition, but stable. No one else involved in the collision received major injuries.  Speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The investigation into the crash is continuing with a final report expected to be released at the end of the week.
