Texting or Speeding Not Factor In Deadly Accident–Updated

Texting or speeding is not believed to be a factor in the accident that killed a Madison High School cheerleader this week, according to the State Highway Patrol’s preliminary report.  Kyera Byas, age 17, died after turning left out of her driveway near Petersburg Transmission, along N.C. 213 and being struck by a French Broad Electric Membership Corporation utility truck, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sgt. P.J. Morgan. The three car collision also seriously injured the passenger in Byas’ vehicle, 18 year old Adriyanna Moreno. Moreno is recovering after surgery.

French Broad Pediatrics, a child health care center in Woodfin where Byas’ mother, works, announced in a Facebook post it is collecting donations to help the Byas family. For more information on donations call 828-348-8232.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 pm on Saturday, February 3rd at Madison High School.
