News From Congressman Chuck Edwards

Secretary Mayorkas has failed to fulfill his oath of his office and has failed the American people.

I receive calls from concerned WNC citizens every day regarding our nation’s border crisis. Border states aren’t the only places suffering the consequences of an open border. The growing crisis is affecting our whole country, including communities in our mountains.Image

Impeaching a cabinet secretary is not to be taken lightly, and it was an important step in continuing the fight to defend our nation’s sovereignty.

Mayorkas’ refusal to abide by federal immigration laws has had a devastating human and financial toll. There will be lasting and debilitating costs to America if we do not take the necessary steps of finishing the border wall.

I will not back down until we have regained operational control of our borders. A nation without borders is not a nation.

CBO baseline reveals conservative fiscal policies work

As a member of the House Budget Committee, I received a first look at the recently unveiled Congressional Budget Office (CBO) baseline, which demonstrates that Republicans’ commitment to fiscal responsibility, coupled with driving Congress to slash spending, have Imagemade a marked improvement in America’s fiscal outlook.

The report shows tangible results of the conservative policies in the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which I supported, that have reined in discretionary spending and reduced the deficit.

Despite the looming threat posed by the trajectory of our national debt – fueled by President Biden’s executive actions – and mandatory spending and interest payments on our debt, Republicans’ debt ceiling deal that limited discretionary spending has unequivocally strengthened our nation’s financial standing.

Stopping the waste of taxpayer dollars on improper payments

As a Budget Committee member, I recently attended a meeting with Gene Dodaro, the comptroller general of the Government Accountability Office, to discuss the issue of improper payments. The federal government makes hundreds of billions of dollars in improper payments every year, including fraudulent payments and overpayments.Image

In 2023 alone, the federal government spent at least $236 billion on improper payments, according to the Office of Management and Budget. That translates into a 5.4 percent improper payment rate across all the government programs.

If improper payments were considered in its own budgetary category, it would be the sixth-largest in the federal budget, after Social Security, Medicare, national defense, Medicaid and interest on the debt.

Last year, improper payments represented roughly $50 billion more than the budget for the U.S. Army.

With the national debt at more than $34 trillion, it is unacceptable to spend more than $200 billion in taxpayer dollars incorrectly. One way to curb improper payments is to prevent them from being made in the first place. I look forward to continuing to work with Comptroller Dodaro to address improper payments and rein in Washington’s out-of-control spending.

Everyone wins with American energy

This administration’s radical approach to American energy is causing energy prices to skyrocket for hard-working Western North Carolinians, while also jeopardizing our national security.

The White House announced last month that it intends to pause all pending approvals of liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal projects.

ImageThis will only benefit our enemies, such as Russia and Iran; hurt our allies; and force the European Union and other countries to purchase LNG from dirtier sources.

If Biden really is concerned about the “climate crisis” as the “existential threat of our time,” he would reverse this decision: American-produced LNG has 41 percent lower lifecycle emissions than natural gas from Russia when sent to the same destination.

The bipartisan bill that I voted for this week, the Unlocking our Domestic LNG Potential Act, is a win on all fronts by protecting American jobs, tapping into American energy, helping our allies and reducing emissions.

Standing up against China’s human rights abuses

The No Dollars to Uyghur Forced Labor Act, which passed the House with my strong support this week, would prevent the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) from purchasing any goods made by forced labor in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China.

The Chinese government has detained more than 1 million Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim religious and ethnic minorities in Xinjiang. At least 100,000 people in that region may be forced to labor in industries such as textiles, lithium-ion batteries, tomatoes and polysilicon solar panels. We must take a strong stand against products made with forced labor, and push back against China’s blatant human rights abuses and illegal market activity.

Is our commander in chief fit to serve?

Special Counsel Robert Hur released a scathing report as part of the Department of Justice’s investigation into President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents. In Hur’s report, evidence was found of Biden’s “willful” retention and disclosure of classified documents.

Hur recommended no criminal charges against Biden, despite evidence of Biden’s clear breach of the law, citing that the president’s memory had “significant limitations.”

The Department of Justice’s failure to pursue criminal charges once again shows the double standard in the application of justice.

It also poses the question: Should someone who can’t even be held responsible for mishandling classified information properly be occupying the Oval Office?

Military Service Academy Day

Image

Military Service Academy Day is March 2 for the students, parents and educators of North Carolina’s 11th District who want to learn more about our nation’s service academies and the application process. I encourage anyone to join us who is interested in learning how they can advance their academic and professional careers while serving our great nation.

Grant seminars for WNC fire departments

Image

WNC’s firefighters risk their own safety to keep us safe. Grant funding is critical to providing them and their departments with the financial support necessary to do their jobs.

My district office is hosting grant workshops so that the brave men and women of NC-11’s fire departments have the tools and resources they need to successfully prepare and write grants.
For more information about the upcoming workshops on March 6 and 13, click here.

With my warmest regards,
